Things You Should Avoid When You Want To Lose Weight Safely
June 18, 2019
Losing weight is always a challenge. It involves following a diet plan and exercises. Most dieters want to lose weight faster and fall into the trap of choosing the wrong weight loss programs. In most cases, they lose weight but in due time they gain weight again. Maintaining healthy weight is another challenge.
Here are some unsafe weight loss strategies that you should avoid when you are aiming to lose weight:
Very Low-Calorie, Fasting and Starvation Diet Plans
Drastic cutting off on calories may result to weight loss but the cost is very high for you. It involves losing those muscles, lower your metabolism, and increase higher percentage of body fat. In time, this also increases your risk for type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
Cutting down on calories below 1,200 per day is hazardous, unless you are supervised by your doctor or a licensed healthcare professional. If not, you will not get the right nutrients that you need to perform your daily activities and satisfy your hunger.
Take note also that in losing weight very fast, you are also putting yourself at risk in gaining the lost weight, and gain even more pounds, especially if you are over 50 years old.
Supplements That Promise Grand Benefits.
Compared to prescription drugs, supplements may not be put to test if they are safe and effective before placing them on the market. Some products that claim to be natural and safe, may not be what they say they are.
If you are considering taking any weight loss product, we recommend that you consult your doctor or healthcare professional first. They know what products are proven effective for weight loss, including the right diet plan for you.
Cleanses or Detox Methods
Cleanses can cause weight loss from water and stool weight. However, they can be harmful because you can be exposed to risks of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and many more. Experts explain that losing plenty of fluid without being supervised by a doctor or a licensed healthcare professional is risky, especially when it is combined with fasting. The body is specially fine-tuned to detoxify and release toxins. Therefore, these cleanses are not necessary as they can cause severe complications. Cleanses can mess with the body’s natural system.
Instead of focusing on detoxifying, focus more on what you eat. If you really want to detoxify or cleanse your body, just drink a lot of water and consume plenty of high-fiber foods.
Avoid All Types of Purging
Purging involves making yourself chew food and spit it out, vomit, and abuse laxatives. Connie Diekman, RD, Nutrition director at Washington University-St. Louis, says that purging is the first step in developing eating disorders.
Diekman further explains that acid in the stomach is very strong. The strong acid is needed to prepare food for digestion and absorption. Contents in the stomach are meant to remain in the stomach, not to be regurgitated into the throat and mouth. Extreme acidic vomit is too dangerous because it can cause erosion in the esophagus, mouth, and on tooth enamel. This can lead to more severe illnesses, including some types of cancer and even tooth decay.
Regular purging through vomiting or abuse of laxatives can also lead to excessive loss of fluids that causes severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. All forms of purging are dangerous, and the most harmful is the use of syrup of ipecac. Just a single dose of this syrup can trigger cardiac irregularity that leads to cardiac arrest.
All forms of purging will not help in losing weight. Healthy eating and beverages are safer forms of weight loss.
Extreme exercises or workout may be good to watch on television, but in reality, extreme workouts can cause severe health problems. It increases your risk for dehydration, injury, and electrolyte imbalance.
The American College of Sports Medicine and American Heart Association suggest doing at least 30 minutes of moderately intense cardio exercise for 5 days every week. Or, do at least 20 minutes of vigorously intense cardio exercise for 3 days every week, and strength-training exercises that work all the main muscle groups 2 to 3 times every week. Even though some people believe that “more is better” usually go beyond what is healthy. This fixation to extreme exercises can result to controlling their lives – unhealthy though.
Just take moderate method of exercising, something that you can stick with and enjoying doing it.
Beware of How You Use Legal and Illegal Drugs
Combining multiple drugs with prescription weight loss drugs is a terrible mistake that lead to severe life-threatening consequences.
Jeannie Gazzaniga-Moloo, PhD, RD, nutritionist, explains that “The potential risks associated with abusing drugs such as cocaine, speed, and meds prescribed for attention deficit disorder, thyroid disorder, or diabetes to lose weight fat outweigh any health benefit you may get from weight loss.” According to her, these health risks include addiction, financial and relationship problems, anxiety, serious headaches, stroke and heart problems, lung and kidney concerns.
By using illegal drugs for whatever purpose is prohibited, while using legal drugs for their unintended purposes without medical supervision is really, really dangerous.
Smoking offers a lot of health risks but some people, especially the young adults, use smoking as a diet approach. Smoking is known to harm almost all of the organs of your body, causes several cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory problems, and other illnesses.
It’s simple as this: Avoid smoking for whatever reason you may have, including losing weight.
So, what’s the best weight loss approach?
Your doctor or a licensed healthcare professional knows the answer.
You can also choose a diet that works for your lifestyle, a diet plan that you can stick with long term. Listen to your body, focus on what you eat, and use common sense. Avoid those risky, expensive and rubbish weight loss plans or products that have not been proven through research and studies.
Enjoy losing weight with the best weight loss plans!
