Exercise and Nutritious Eating Are the Cornerstones to a Healthy Life

nutritionThe weight loss market abounds with pills, creams, and every doo-dad you can name under the sun. Even though there are so many weight loss aids, many people still choose to lose weight “naturally”, without the assistance of weight loss pills or pre-packaged meals.

The natural weight loss movement is highly commendable. It is a road that takes hard work, and is well worth it in the end. Exercising and healthy eating are the two most important components of the natural weight loss plan.

When the subject of healthy eating comes up, many people draw a blank as to where to begin. Healthy recipes and foods can be found through some research – online, in your local bookstore, from a medical professional, or from a nutrition professional (like a dietician). Once you know the how, what, and whys of what you are going to be putting into your mouth, the dieting journey can be an adventure full of new sights, tastes, and techniques. Variety is important to any diet, as there is a tendency to stick to a few familiar recipes and eat the same meal over and over again. Pick up a few more cookbooks or look into taking a class or two. The effort you place into learning how to feed yourself will pay dividends for the rest of your life.

Exercise is also an important part of a healthy individual’s life. For many, it can be as simple as attending their local gym or weight loss center, or putting on a pair of shoes for a daily walk or run. This can also be a prime opportunity for one to start a new sport or learn a new skill. Exercise DVDs can be readily purchased for at-home viewing, and can often be a great introduction into yoga, pilates, dancing, or self-defense.

Similarly to nutrition, exercise is most effective when varied. Back-to-back days of training in the same activity may lead to strain and unnecessary injuries. It is always recommended that you wait 48 hours before commencing with the activity. For example, running on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and using the Elliptical Machine on Tuesdays and Thursdays, is an effective weight-loss exercise regime. Running daily from Monday through Friday will not allow sufficient time for muscles to heal and grow stronger – ultimately leading to weakening of the muscles.

Exercising can be divided into two main groups – aerobic and anaerobic. Both types of exercise are important for overall health. Aerobic exercise — activities that help to strengthen your cardiovascular system and heart – can include running, hill-walking, or rollerblading. Anaerobic exercise – activities performed in short bursts with the goal of increasing strength or flexibility – can include lifting weights, interval training, and sprinting. Both aerobic endurance training and anaerobic strength training strengthen different parts of your body and by maintaining a balance between these two types, you’ll be able to achieve fitness at a much faster rate.

Broadening your knowledge of healthy living is one of the most important investments you can make towards living a healthier and longer life.
